Saving your tooth

Relief from the inside out

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach it, the pulp can become inflamed or infected, causing pain and swelling.

During a root canal we gently clean out the infected tissue, disinfect the inside of the tooth and seal it. Most teeth then get a crown for lasting protection.

Signs you may need one

Sensitivity to hot or cold that doesn’t fade

Pain when biting or chewing

Swelling or tenderness in the gums

A tooth that has darkened in color

A pimple-like bump on the gum

Common questions

Root canal FAQ

Is a root canal painful?

With local anesthetic, most patients say it feels much like getting a filling. The treatment is meant to relieve pain, not cause it.

Why not just pull the tooth?

Keeping your natural tooth helps you chew comfortably, protects your bite and avoids gaps that can cause neighboring teeth to shift.

What is recovery like?

Some tenderness for a few days is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most people return to their routine the next day.
